DIRTBIKES

I actually didn't start riding dirtbikes until November of 2008  I originally had tried riding a larger bike  (a Suzuki DRZ400) the summer before in my backyard, but it was too tall and too powerful for me at the time.  The 400 was intimidating so I wasn't really stoked about getting into riding.  While on vacation that November in upstate New York, I pretty much got put on an XR100, with a ton of gear and  was sent out into 2 feet of snow.  Even with studs, riding in the snow is not easy, especially on a small bike like the XR100 so all I did was either fall down or get stuck.

December 2008 I was introduced to iceriding on the same XR100.  WAY more fun than snow!  When the ice is smooth, you can drift like a Speedway racer. After a winter of iceriding, I was ready for my own so I decided on a TTR 125 for my starter bike.  I then sold my TTR and bought a pink and black KX100.  We ride a lot of trails in SoCal so the TTR was actually perfect for getting through the tight areas between boulders.  But the tall hills were difficult to get up without banging down a few gears, leaving you bogging down in first right before the top.  I miss my TTR, but the KX is a lot more fun.

I have learned a lot about riding dirt in the first year and even made a small 12-turn track on my property so that we could practice regularly when we weren't hitting the trails.  But the KX is too loud for the neighbors and it echoes off the hills and htrough the trails.  So I haven't been riding as much.  Which is unfortunate because I feel dirtbike riding is really great exercise and I find it helps me on the roadracing track for accidental (not purposeful yet!) slides, rear braking and maintaining balance under adverse conditions (or mistakes).

Before I sold my TTR we put soft compound DOTs on it and had a little fun psuedo-SuperMotard style.  I would like to get into that more to practice for roadracing but those kids are crazy-aggressive and have no fear yet.   I just don't feel like breaking an ankle so I won't get into the mix with them, but I will have some fun in the parking lot.

Bottomline? Dirt is just plain fun.
