QUADS & OFFROADING

I never thought I'd really be able to appreciate riding quads after riding dirtbikes. Especially after highsiding my Can Am 400. But I do!  Riding the dunes on quads is a lot of fun. The dunes are never-ending, they just go on forever, and for this reason you need to be mindful of your fuel and having chase vehicles in the event of mechanicals or injury.

Shawn and I were invited by a friend of ours, Mike FItzpatrick, chief mechanic from James Gang Racing, to go out to Imperial San Dunes at Buttercup to have a little 4 wheel fun.  The weather was threatening to rain, it was cold and we would have to drive about 3 1/2 hours to get there. Little did I know just how much fun I would have that day and that al of the "trouble" was going to be well worth it...

I sat in the truck for the first 25 minutes debating if I should even get suited up, it was so cold and windy and I was miserable. So after everyone coerced me into my gear (with so many layers I looked like the Michelin Man) I finally made my way over to the group.  Then it was ON!  I jumped on one of the quads I was assigned (a slower one, heh!) and started doing donuts. I was ready :)

We all took off in a group and I remember the first set of moguls I came to were about a 1/4 mile long, sheesh. That's a lot of moguls.  Then, we went to visit the Great Wall of Mexico and I came to my first super steep drop off. I shook my head and thought, heeeeellll no! I am so not going down that! Then two of the kids went and I thought, well now I HAVE to. So I did and it was such a rush.  Looking back, comparing it to Comp Hill, it wasn't bad at all. Although I still think the first mini hill was actually steeper than Comp Hill, just not as long.

The whole day was just great! I even had the opportunity to ride in the Kawasaki Teryx which scared the ever living crud out of me. Having your fate in someone else's hands when going straight down a steep hill or jumping dune crests is a rush indeed. I screamed the most while riding as a passenger in the Teryx. It is definitely an awesome little ride.

Anyway, we got some great video and had a ton of fun and I cannot wait to go back!
