SNOWSPORTS

Being from New Orleans, and seeing snow only twice in my life, this is surely something I thought I'd never do every winter.  But like a fish to water, I am drawn to the snow.  I started out snowblading (also known as skiboarding) at Heavenly in South Lake Tahoe, which is still one of my favorite places to play.  Mammoth has been my new stomping ground, but only because it is better than Big Bear and closer than Tahoe or Vail.  Still there is something wonderful about the end of a day in front of a fire.  Where else can you surf and ski in the same day?  California!

Years later, I tried snowboarding because it was "cooler" -- well I have never jacked my knees up more in my entire life.  Every winter I seem to get a really good one and am down for a while.  Nothing like helicoptering in and being quite sure you've finally torn an ACL or broken a bone.  And still I go back every year.

There is simply something about flying downhill that appeals to me much like streetluge, but much colder with no need for leathers.  Truthfully, I'd rather be streetluging, as I hate the cold and I hate eating it flying downhill only to come up with a mouth full of snow.   But it's winter, so I take advantage of what I can get!  I find the atmosphere invigorating and the fun with friends after the day is over very entertaining.  These days, I mostly Snowblade. I feel the maneuverability is far superior, although heavy powder often slows you down.  People are often surprised at how fast you can go on a pair of these; obviously not as fast as most skiers due to the stability. But the jumps you can make in these and running downhill backwards for long distances often makes up for it.  I am surprised that I do not see as many people on Snowblades anymore.  I guess that's another reason I feel compelled to snowboard.  I suppose it is almost as though I am wearing legwarmers and bangle bracelets when I am out on the slopes on my blades. ;)  But it is easy as heck to fly camera on snowblades. And someone has to fly camera!
